Shiprock volcanic plug formation near Farmingotn, NM. The formation of this 1500 foot tall rock structure is thought to have happened after the exterior of an ancient volcano eroded away leaving the harder magma core largely intact. The surrounding vertical rock walls were formed through a similar process.
